Colts
7 - Bookham B 2
The
Colts, in their new away kit, produced an avalanche of goals to
bury their local rivals and win bragging rights as the premier team
in Bookham.

The
match did not start very promisingly though - Colts occasionally
looking as if they were playing underwater. Stephen and Greg put
together a couple of great attacks, Steven having an effort tipped
over by the magnificent goalkeeper after 3 minutes. But against
the run of play, the B's stormed through to shoot past Grant and
go one up - the crowd was silenced.

It
could and did get worse though, when the B's converted a bobbling
ball on 17 minutes to bring the score to an unlikely 2-0. The brave
opposition may well have regretted their temerity 2 minutes later,
however, as the boys unleashed a white blizzard that utterly froze
the B's out of the remainder of the game.

Man
of the Match Steven led the way, charging onto a great through ball
from Josh, spinning out to the left of the goal and then firing
high into the left hand corner after 19 minutes - the fight back
was on. And the B's looked stunned to have the same thing happen
2 minutes later to bring the Colts back to level terms.
Greg,
Gregg, Ben, Toby and Steven continued to taunt the defence with
deft touches and probing runs, while Josh, Toby and Alfie were going
great guns in midfield, winning the ball and setting up runs for
the forwards.
After
26 minutes, Gregg followed up on a loose ball in the area to crash
the Colts into the lead for the first time and send the crowd into
raptures - happy days were here again at 3-2.
The
second half saw some good defending from the ever dependable Scott,
Henry, Nathan, Alex and the most improved Jack. Grant looked solid
and well positioned between the sticks, and Donald crunched and
cleared like an armoured car. Sam came on to provide attacking edge
and is showing great improvement.
Steven
sent the ball whistling over the bar after 3 and 8 minutes, but
we had to wait until 14 minutes before El Capitano, Greg, opened
his account for the day - 4-2 and the B's were buried.
It
was now a master class of spectacular shots, overwhelming midfield
domination and blanket defence. Gregg notched up his second after
20 minutes, followed by a spectacular Ben effort to make it 6-2
after 22 minutes.
Alex
narrowly missed past the left post after 23 minutes, before Greg
administered the coup de grace after 26 minutes. This was a crushing
victory, emphasising a massive improvement this season and boding
very well for future games.

A
magnificently struck shot from the trusty left foot of wonder boy
Greg, sent the ball rocketing into the top of the net to take Bookham
to level terms 2 minutes from the end of a truly magnificent game
at Bookham today - the Colts had fought like tigers for an hour,
and thoroughly deserved the point.
The
game started in a yellow whirlwind, with Steven being fed from Greg
to burn up the startled Oakway defence and blast into the net after
3 minutes. After 10 minutes Donald hit the bar with a piledriver
shot that could be heard in Fetcham - the terrier-like Alfie then
hit the post from the rebound - we have not seen drama like this
in Bookham for years.
Nathan,
Donald and Scott were all making fabulous tackles, while newbie
Gregg was ripping thorugh Oakway defenders like a veteran, narrowly
missing after 13 minutes. Midfield colossus Josh was doing his usual
great work, and Jack seemed to have had jet fuel for breakfast as
he sprinted alongside Oakway attackers to rob them of the ball.
After 15 minutes, relentless pressure paid off and Gregg scored
a fantastic debut goal from the left side of the pitch - it seemed
like party-time already.
The
pitch side congas came to an abrupt end after 22 minutes, however,
as Oakway sped past the defence to put one past a well-positioned
Grant. Game On!!
The
final minutes of the half saw Grant making great saves and clearances
to keep the score at 2-1 but Oakway looked very threatening as the
boys came in for half time.
The
second half started well with ding dong attacks from both sides,
Ben, Steven, Gregg and Alfie foraging forward looking to push the
lead back out to 2. Toby and Sam came on to inject pace and energy,
and Sam nearly scored his debut goal as he tried to lob the Oakway
keeper.
Disaster
struck at 55 minutes when Oakway broke away to score the equalizer
- and things got worse when the Colts' defence stood and watched
an Oakway cross, and well struck header hit the back of the net
to take the visitors into a one goal lead.
We
were then treated to the now traditional tidal wave of Bookham attacks
culminating in Greg's fabulous saving goal, sending the crowd into
raptures. The referee seemed to play about 40 minutes of injury
time as Oakway pressed relentlessly forward - but steadfast defending
and goal keeping kept the score level at the final whistle.
Probably
the finest performance your correspondent has ever seen from the
Colts.

A
plucky performance from the Cs who lacked an outlet for their tenacious
midfield play and effective clearances their strikers were no match
for the A's wily central defensive unit of Scott, Jack and Donald
who played the offside trap to devastating effect. The A's are starting
to see the fruits of their labours on the training ground, the more
they practice the luckier they get.
Toby
played his debut as reserve keeper, flawless distribution, excellent
positioning and then he gave away and saved the highly controversial
2nd half penalty when Teague was one on one and then threw himself
over the charging Toby.
On
8 minutes Greg sent a low cross into the box which caused havoc
in the defence leaving the unmarked Ben a simple tap-in. Alex had
a brilliant first half tackling, passing and running up and down
his wing he had a good shot saved on 15 minutes and a minute later
sent a high
looping chip into the far top corner. Sam was unlucky not score
with a tricky back heel. Greg and Josh bossed the midfield with
style and quiet assurance.
2-0
at half time, general satisfaction at the score line and a growing
respect for the opposition.
The second half opened with a concerted attack on the C's goal Alex's
lay-off for the charging Gregory was turned into a screaming daisy
cutter that the keeper never saw. From then on the As were camped
in the opposition's half stringing passes together and forcing a
string of good saves from Joe Blake. Alex, Steven, Ben, Donald and
Alfie all putting shots too close to the keeper. Then came Ben's
contender for goal of the season fully 18 yards from goal Ben got
underneath a bobbling ball which cleared the keeper and nestled
gently in the back of the net.
In
a rare breakaway move from the Cs Teague was free in the A's half
and decided to take on Toby but lost his nerve passed into space
behind the diminutive keeper and as Toby dived at his feet and took
a spectacular tumble. Having ignored the frantically waving linesman
signalling yet
another offside, the referee felt he had no choice but to point
at the spot. Sammy stepped up confidently and shot straight at Toby's
feet. Toby dropped gratefully on to the ball and his clearance was
the signal for another sustained wave of attacking from the As.
Steven cutting in
from the wing sent a powerful shot across the keeper that took a
stinging deflection from a full back on its way into the net. Alfie
distinguished himself in the 2nd half with a fine wide performance
that combined attack and defence in equal measure and made him a
MoM
contender. Scott gave another virtuoso performance of tackling that
left none who met him in any doubt that they had been tackled by
a Master.
A magnificent
team performance full of classy individual contributions that gave
Dawn & Sally a hard time choosing MoM. The victor's smiles and
obvious glee were all Gregg Pettifor needed to
convince him to sign for Bookham As. With a following wind his papers
will be processed in time for his debut against the formidable OakwaySports
next Saturday.
