Colts 4 - Wallington and Carshalton 1
Don’t
be fooled by the score – this was a nail-biting cup-tie
the like of which we haven’t seen for some considerable
time – we had rocketing headers, bending free kicks and
penalty saves – and that was just in the warm-up!! The Colts
did a professional job in dumping the snappily named Wallington
and Carshalton out of the cup (they used to be called Links B,
but apparently the new name is easier to text).
The
first half was a tale of missed opportunities – Steve was
past the keeper in less than a minute but just missed. On 7 minutes,
Steven and Greg executed a great short corner interplay sequence
– Greg was unlucky to thump the bar. On 11 minutes, Steven
crossed and Nick just missed the tap in. On 15 minutes Guy had a
long shot saved. Are you getting the picture?
On
17 minutes, Greg combined with Kingsley who fed Steven – again
the shot missed. 4 minutes later Nick had a shot saved and George
thumped the rebound against the bar. Then Guy fed Steven who crossed
to Nick who cracked the ball over the bar – what a sickener!!
Guy, Josh and Steven all had shots saved and it seemedlike we were
going to be able to re-group at half time.
Then
the unbelievable happened – W&C stormed down the pitch
for pretty much the first time in the match and slotted the ball
past Grant – 1-0 – were the Colts going to regret their
profligacy in the first half? The referee’s whistle blew for
half-time.
Never
one for panic, DGH told the team to keep cool heads and storm back
in the second half and score some goals.
Paradoxically,
it was W&C who came out guns blazing – the defence of
Alex, Jack, Scott and Kingsley were soon in action. The rest of
the half is a bit of a blur – not least because your correspondent
lost the Post-It with his notes on it. Here are the highlights:
On
about 10 minutes, Greg thumped a corner across the goal –
the ball got was pushed back to him and he crossed it again –
this time a charging Alex walloped it with his head and the net
billowd – 1-1 and the Colts were back in it.
5
minutes later and Steven got the ball on the left – he rocketed
down the flank and let a belter off from just outside the area –
the ball crashed into the top of the net and the Colts were in the
lead – what a screamer Steven.
W&G
were finished yet – their next attack ended with a hand ball
from Jack and a penalty. The crowd seemed to sense that this was
a pivotal moment and the noise level rose precipitously. The ref
blew and the ball was struck – hey diddle diddle straight
down the middle – Grant was on it – What a Save!!.
Grant
belted if forward and Steven was on it – he had his heels
clipped at the edge of the area. We all felt there was a chance
from the free kick – we were right – the ball soared
and bent and billowed the net past a despairing goalie.
Dan
was like a dynamo right through the second half – constantly
worrying defenders. Ben was his usual muscular self and it was these
two who combined to make if 4-1, thumped into the net by Ben.
The
final whistle blew on one of the great cup victories – the
second round awaits the Super Colts.
